The Union Environment Ministry (MoEFCC) has urged the National Green Tribunal to direct Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to submit annual conservation plans for Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana), a Western Ghats endemic shrub that flowers once in 12 years. It has been recorded at 34 localities in 14 ecoregions, including the Nilgiri, Palani-Kodaikanal, Anamalai and Munnar-Idukki landscapes. JNTBGRI, Thiruvananthapuram, proposed a species-specific action plan covering ecological monitoring, restoration of degraded montane grasslands, removal of invasive species and tourism regulation. States will implement it under the Development of Wildlife Habitats scheme with MoEFCC support.
