New Species Found and a Rare Plant Rediscovered: Wasp, Earthworm and Henckelia

Save

Three notable biodiversity records have been reported. A new parasitic wasp, Chelonus (Carinichelonus) mahadeb, was discovered in tea estates of Assam; it belongs to the Braconidae family, known for parasitoid behaviour. The rare endemic plant Henckelia monophylla, of the Gesneriaceae family and first collected in 1836, has been rediscovered in Arunachal Pradesh after about 189 years. A new earthworm, Drawida vazhania (genus Drawida, family Moniligastridae), was found in Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary in Thrissur district; earthworms play a key role in soil fertility and nutrient cycling.
