Scientists have reported the discovery of a new species of porcelain crab from the Lakshadweep Islands and have named it Pachycheles ravichandrani. Porcelain crabs are small crustaceans that, despite their crab-like look, are more closely related to squat lobsters; they usually live among corals and rocks in shallow marine waters. The find adds to the documented marine biodiversity of Lakshadweep, India's coral island Union Territory in the Arabian Sea, and underlines the value of continued taxonomic surveys of India's island ecosystems.
