Scientists have described a new freshwater crab species, Ghatiana karnataka, from the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka. It is the 15th species of the genus Ghatiana recorded from the Western Ghats and is one of the species endemic to Karnataka. The discovery adds to the documented richness of freshwater biodiversity in the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot.
