Iceland Explores Geothermal and Carbfix Carbon Storage Cooperation with India

Save

Iceland is looking to partner with India on geothermal power and on CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage), notably through its Carbfix technology. Carbfix turns captured carbon dioxide (CO₂) into rock through permanent mineralisation, locking the carbon away underground. Iceland believes the method could help cut emissions from India's steel and cement sectors and wants to expand it here. Iceland meets about 70% of its electricity needs from hydropower and 30% from geothermal sources, and can offer India technical and regulatory know-how. India's geothermal potential is estimated at 10.6 GW, and its development is promoted under the National Policy on Geothermal Energy.
