Tamil Nadu has relaxed the eligibility rules of the Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Scheme, under which babies born in government hospitals receive a 1-gram gold ring. Earlier, only mothers who were permanent residents of Tamil Nadu qualified. Now women who settled outside the State after marriage can also benefit, provided both maternal grandparents are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu and the family submits supporting documents. The revised conditions cover babies born in government hospitals from June 22, 2026. The Chief Minister launched the scheme on September 28, 2026.
