The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister inaugurated the renovated Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai. The work was carried out by the Heritage Wing of the Public Works Department (PWD) at a total cost of ₹10.25 crore. The building was originally Rani Mangammal's summer palace and, during British rule, served as the Collector's Bungalow and the Judges' Residence. In 1955 the Tamil Nadu government gifted it to the All India Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, and it opened as a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi in 1959. It holds 14 belongings of Gandhi, including his blood-stained cloth.
