Madras High Court dismisses plea against amended Assembly resolution on Mekedatu dam

Save

The Madras High Court dismissed a petition challenging the amended Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly resolution on the proposed Mekedatu dam across the Cauvery. The amendment asked the Centre to constitute a tribunal to settle the Tamil Nadu–Karnataka Mekedatu dispute. The court held that legislators who were present and raised no objection when the amendment was moved cannot later challenge it, noting the resolution was voted on and passed unanimously. It cited Article 212 of the Constitution, which bars courts from questioning legislative proceedings for procedural irregularity, and Rule 286 of the Assembly Rules, which lets the Speaker decide procedural questions.
