Legislative Milestone: Assembly Elects Speaker and Deputy Speaker Unopposed

On May 12, 2026, J. C. D. Prabhakar of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Following traditional legislative protocol, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay recalled that the practice of the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition escorting the newly elected Speaker to the Chair originated in the United Kingdom's parliamentary system.

Key Legislative Updates:

  • Deputy Speaker Election: Immediately after assuming charge, Speaker Prabhakar conducted the election for the Deputy Speaker, in which TVK MLA M. Ravisankar was elected unopposed.
  • TASMAC Footprint: In parallel policy discussions, it was highlighted that the state's ongoing closure order affects 717 shops out of the total 4,765 retail liquor outlets currently operated by TASMAC across Tamil Nadu.

For TNPSC and Polity aspirants, the uncontested election of the Speaker and the historical adoption of Westminster parliamentary conventions are key focus areas under the 'State Legislature' module.
