Tamil Nadu has introduced five high-yielding teak clones to raise timber productivity and farmers' long-term income. The Green Tamil Nadu Mission (GTM), with the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), Coimbatore, is promoting clones IFGTB-TG-1 to IFGTB-TG-5, chosen for faster growth, better girth, straight cylindrical trunks and superior timber. About 55,000 clonal seedlings will be planted in demonstration plots across 20 teak-suitable districts. A polyclonal approach will cut risks from pests, disease and climate stress, backed by tissue-culture units. Teak (Tectona grandis) is a deciduous Lamiaceae tree prized for durable, termite-resistant wood.
