Varanasi Airport in Uttar Pradesh is set to host India's first six-lane underpass built beneath a runway that remains in active use.
- The underpass will be about 450 metres long.
- It will allow road traffic to pass below the runway.
- Aircraft will continue to take off and land on the runway above while vehicles move underneath.
The structure is designed so that airport expansion and road connectivity can proceed together without one disrupting the other.
