The Rajasthan Cabinet has removed the rule that barred people with more than two children from contesting Panchayati Raj and urban local body elections. The two-child norm was brought in during 1995 for population control, but is now seen as outdated because the State's fertility rate has fallen to 2 from 3.6 in 1991-94. Two Amendment Bills will be introduced in the ongoing Assembly session to amend the Rajasthan Panchayati Raj Act, 1994, and the Rajasthan Municipalities Act, 2009.
