India set up its first government-supported National Biobank devoted to Lysosomal Storage Disorders. These are inherited metabolic diseases caused by the lack of particular enzymes, leading to harmful build-up of substances in cells. The biobank will store samples and data to support research, diagnosis and the development of treatments for these rare diseases. Such disorders are often diagnosed late and their therapies are costly, so a dedicated national repository can help improve early detection and patient care.
