Justice Kurian Joseph Committee Report (Part I) on Union-State Relations Tabled

Save

Part I of the report of the High-Level Committee on Union-State Relations, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Kurian Joseph, was placed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. K. Ashok Vardhan Shetty and Dr. M. Naganathan were its other members. The panel recommended that Governors no longer serve as Chancellors of State universities and that education be moved fully back from the Concurrent List to the State List. It said the aim is to 'right-size' the Union, not weaken it. The earlier Rajamannar Committee was set up in 1969 by M. Karunanidhi; the S.R. Bommai case (1994) held federalism to be part of the basic structure.
