India has put forward reforms to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme to tighten regulation of the global diamond trade. The scheme governs trade in rough diamonds to keep conflict diamonds out of the market, and only member nations may trade certified rough diamonds among themselves. Although India does not mine diamonds, it imports roughly 40% of the world's rough diamonds for cutting and polishing, chiefly at Surat and Mumbai.
