Assam plans to buy a proton therapy machine for cancer care at a cost of about ₹500 crore. That will make it the first state to offer this treatment in a government hospital. Proton therapy targets tumours with proton beams instead of X-rays and causes less harm to nearby tissue. In India it is now available only in private hospitals. The facility should also save Northeast patients long trips for treatment.
