Brandt's hedgehog (Paraechinus hypomelas) was recorded in India for the first time, in the Rajouri-Poonch region of Jammu and Kashmir, confirmed via DNA and morphometric analysis; the species was previously known from Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Central Asia.
