A study found that wetlands in West Bengal's Murshidabad district are shrinking by about 2.1% a year, nearly three times the global rate and 1.5 times India's average. The combined area of 14 major wetlands fell from 5,524.7 hectares in 1990 to 1,700.2 hectares in 2025. More than half are badly degraded by invasive weeds, siltation and pollution, and only 4 of the 14 retain working river links.
