The Meenakshi-Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai was consecrated after a gap of 17 years. Believed to be about 1,800 years old, it has 14 gopurams including four raja gopurams, the Golden Lotus Tank and many granite mandapams. The Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara rulers and Nayaks shaped it, with the Nayaks (Viswanatha Nayak, Tirumalai Nayak, Rani Mangammal) leaving the biggest imprint. Meenakshi's sanctum was built in the 12th century CE under Kulasekhara Pandya. The Ashta Shakti Mandapam is the main entrance and the Unjal Mandapam dates to 1653. After Delhi Sultanate raids, the temple stayed shut from 1323 to 1371 until Kumara Kampanna revived worship in 1378.
