On 13 October 2026, the Madras High Court ruled that the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker had rightly accepted the resignations of six AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) MLAs. They had resigned between 26 May and 29 June 2026 and later joined Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The case stemmed from charges that AIADMK MLAs defied the party whip in a confidence motion on 13 May 2026. The court held that accepting resignations and deciding disqualification are separate constitutional processes, and directed the Speaker to publish a timetable within seven days and finish the pending disqualification cases against four MLAs within two months.
