Indian scientists from the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) and IIT-Guwahati have created RK-251, a “smart” anticancer drug meant to switch on mainly inside cancer cells, which could reduce harm to healthy tissue. The drug is triggered by the high levels of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) found in cancer cells, and on activation it releases the anticancer compound NBDHEX. This targeted approach aims to limit the side-effects typical of conventional chemotherapy.
