Karnataka bans sale of analogue paneer as 'paneer' for one year under Food Safety Act

Save

Karnataka has banned the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of analogue paneer as “paneer” across the State for one year, from 17 August 2026 to 17 August 2027. Analogue paneer is a non-dairy product made with vegetable oil, vegetable fat or other non-dairy inputs in place of milk fat or milk solids. The order was issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, mainly using Sections 30(2)(a), 18 and 29. Standardised products like processed cheese, frozen desserts and mixed fat spreads, which have their own food categories, are exempt. Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh have imposed similar curbs.
