Kuno's Indian-born cheetah KJP21 gives birth to five cubs, starting Botswana lineage in India

Save

At Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, the Indian-born female cheetah KJP21 has delivered five cubs. Their father is a male brought in from Botswana, so these are the first cheetahs of Botswana lineage to be born on Indian soil. KJP21 becomes the third India-born female to breed, following Mukhi and KGP12. The country now has 60 cheetahs, 41 of them born in India. Nine animals from Botswana, six females and three males, reached Kuno in February 2026 to widen the genetic pool of Project Cheetah. Earlier batches came from Namibia (8 animals, 2022) and South Africa (12 animals, 2023).
