Introduction

A modern, integrated Interstate Bus Terminal (ISBT) and joint check-post complex was jointly inaugurated on 10 August 2026 at Walayar on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan through video conferencing. The ₹180 crore facility, built on a 28-acre site, streamlines passenger and freight movement between the two states and eliminates the long-standing problem of dual check-post harassment for travellers and truckers.

Facilities at Walayar ISBT

  • Bus bays: 60 interstate bus bays with covered passenger waiting lounges, luggage trolleys, and washroom facilities with 24×7 maintenance
  • Joint check-posts: Integrated single-window clearance for Motor Vehicles Department (MVD), Commercial Tax, Excise, Forest, and Police departments of both states; one-stop document verification
  • Freight terminal: 40 truck bays with weighbridges, e-permit kiosks, and FASTag-based toll integration; average truck waiting time reduced from 4–6 hours to under 40 minutes
  • Commercial complex: 40 retail shops, restaurant court, Aavin and Milma (Kerala) milk parlours, medical clinic, and dormitory for drivers and conductors
  • Sustainable features: 1 MW rooftop solar plant, rainwater harvesting system, sewage treatment plant, and EV charging stations for buses and private cars

Nilgiris north, Anaimalai south of Palghat Gap. NH-544 (old NH-47) Salem-Kanyakumari. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan. Both states bear cost equally (₹90 crore each). Palakkad is Kerala's largest district by area.

Conclusion

The Walayar Interstate Bus Terminal is a model of cooperative federalism between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. By integrating check-posts and passenger facilities into a single modern complex, the project delivers direct benefits to passengers and freight operators while saving time and fuel costs. Such inter-state infrastructure partnerships will be critical to realising India's 'One Nation, One Market' vision under the National Logistics Policy.
