In January 2026, Karnataka constituted the Karnataka Platform-Based Gig Workers Welfare Development Board under its 2025 Act on gig workers' social security. Chaired by the Labour Minister, it includes officials, four worker representatives and four aggregator representatives (Zomato, Uber, Ola, Amazon). Aggregators and workers must register, workers receive unique IDs, and platforms pay a 1-1.5% welfare fee that may be raised to 5%. Tamil Nadu set up India's first such board in December 2023 under the Tamil Nadu Manual Workers Act, 1982.
