International Sloth Day falls on 17 October and aims to raise awareness about sloths, their habitats and their conservation. It was started in 2010 by AIUNAU, a wildlife conservation organisation from Colombia. The 2026 theme is "Sloths Wild and Free." There are 6 living sloth species, split into two-toed and three-toed groups, found mostly in the tropical forests of Central and South America. On the IUCN Red List, the Pygmy Three-toed Sloth (Bradypus pygmaeus), endemic to Isla Escudo de Veraguas in Panama, is Critically Endangered; the Maned Three-toed Sloth (Bradypus torquatus) is Vulnerable, and the other four are Least Concern.
