International Literacy Day, observed on September 8, reaches its 60th anniversary in 2026, with Mexico hosting the global celebration. The 2026 theme is "Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity". UNESCO proclaimed the Day in 1966 at its 14th General Conference, after the 1965 Tehran conference on ending illiteracy; it was first observed in 1967, the year ECOSOC also endorsed it. UNESCO's literacy awards include the King Sejong Literacy Prizes and Confucius Prizes for Literacy, six in all each year. In India, the ULLAS programme promotes adult, digital and financial literacy.
