IEVP 2026: Global Delegates Witness the "Festival of Democracy" in India

IEVP 2026: Showcasing the Operational Excellence of Indian Democracy

In a powerful display of transparency and technological prowess, the Election Commission of India (ECI) organized the International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP) 2026. This flagship outreach initiative invited election management bodies (EMBs) from around the world to witness the scale and precision of the legislative assembly elections held across five Indian states and union territories.

Two-Phase Global Observation

The programme was strategically divided into two phases to cover the diverse electoral landscapes of the poll-bound regions:

  • Phase I (April 8-9, 2026): Over 43 delegates from 23 countries visited Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. They observed innovative local features such as the 'Nila' welcoming robot in Puducherry and Gen Z-themed polling booths in Kerala.
  • Phase II (April 22-23, 2026): 34 delegates from 17 countries focused on the elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. They visited critical infrastructure including District Control Rooms and Media Monitoring Centres.

Technology at the Forefront: EVM and VVPAT

A central highlight for the international delegates was the hands-on demonstration of India's indigenous Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs). The delegates participated in mock polls at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM), where they expressed keen interest in the administrative and technical safeguards that prevent tampering and ensure electoral integrity.

Significance of the Programme

The IEVP serves as a platform for South-South cooperation and global knowledge sharing. By observing the "dispatch and distribution" centres and the rigorous security arrangements, foreign officials gained insights into the management of the world’s largest democratic exercise. The presence of organizations like International IDEA further solidified the programme's status as a premier global event for election management.

For TNPSC and competitive exam aspirants, the IEVP 2026 is a vital topic under "Indian Polity" and "International Relations," illustrating India’s leadership in promoting democratic values through technology and transparency.
