The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was observed on 9 August 2026. Established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1994, the day promotes Indigenous rights, cultures, languages, traditional knowledge, land rights, equality, well-being and self-determination. The date recalls the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations, held in 1982. The theme for 2026 is "Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being."
