The International Day of Human Space Flight is observed on April 12. It recalls 12 April 1961, when Yuri Gagarin of the Soviet Union became the first person to travel into space and orbit the Earth. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the day in 2011. The observance underlines how space science and technology can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and improve the quality of human life.
