The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is observed on 26 September. It was declared by the UN General Assembly in 2013 and has been marked since 2014, with the aim of raising public awareness of the threat nuclear weapons pose and promoting their complete elimination. The UNGA's very first resolution in 1946 named nuclear disarmament as a major UN goal. In 2026, the high-level plenary meeting is scheduled for 29 September in New York. According to SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute), an estimated 12,187 nuclear weapons remained worldwide in 2026.
