The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty falls on 17 October each year. First marked on 17 October 1987, it was formally recognised by the UN General Assembly through a 1992 resolution. Its aims are to eliminate poverty, protect human dignity and help people secure safe housing, clean water, sanitation, healthcare and education. In 2026, over 2.8 billion people lack adequate housing, while 826 million are in extreme poverty, living on less than US$3 a day (2021 PPP). The focus for 2026 is 'Safe Homes for All', within the 2026–2028 theme 'United for Peace and Human Rights', and it supports SDGs 1, 10, 11 and 16.
