India's metro rail network has become the third largest in the world, with more than 1,143 km of operational lines. It has grown from just 248 km in 2014, and the number of cities with metro services has risen from 5 to 29 in the same period. India now trails only China and the United States. The expansion reflects a major push in urban public transport infrastructure over the past decade.
