Indian Railways has operated the first-ever direct commercial container freight train from Kolkata Port in West Bengal to the Biratnagar Customs Yard in Nepal. The direct service allows containers to move by rail from the port to the Nepalese customs point without being shifted to trucks midway, which can cut transit time and logistics costs. Nepal is a landlocked country that depends heavily on Indian ports for its overseas trade, so the new link strengthens India–Nepal connectivity and supports smoother cross-border commerce.
