The Indian Army marked the 80th Infantry Day, also called Shaurya Diwas, on 27 October 2026. The day recalls 27 October 1947, when troops of the Sikh Regiment's 1st Battalion were flown into Srinagar Airport to repel Pakistan-backed tribal invaders in Jammu and Kashmir. The operation saved Srinagar and protected the territorial integrity of Jammu and Kashmir. Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Ranjit Rai, killed in the 1947 operations, received the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) posthumously. Infantry Day honours the bravery, sacrifice and service of infantry soldiers, who form the Indian Army's main ground-combat arm.
