India has put forward Meghalaya's living root bridges as its nomination for the UNESCO World Heritage List for the 2026-27 cycle. These bridges are grown by guiding the aerial roots of rubber fig trees across streams and rivers until they form strong natural crossings. They are created and maintained traditionally by the Khasi and Jaintia communities and are found mostly in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. Nongriat village is well known for its famous double-decker root bridge.
