India has brought out its first full policy on tailings. It allows critical and strategic minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earths to be recovered from mine waste, tailing ponds, slag and industrial residues. The Indian Bureau of Mines, CMPDI and the Atomic Minerals Directorate will survey these materials. By-product minerals such as selenium, tellurium, germanium, molybdenum and silver can also be recovered. The goal is to import less and supply green-technology industries.
