India and Bangladesh have begun talks on renewing the Ganga Water Sharing Treaty, which runs out in December 2026. The 1996 treaty decides how the dry-season flow at the Farakka Barrage, built in 1975, is shared. Through the Joint River Commission, both sides are measuring the flow of the Ganga and Padma every ten days until 31 May. The two countries share 54 rivers.
