The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a $230 million loan to modernise Chennai’s water supply and sanitation infrastructure. Under the Chennai Climate-Resilient Water Security and Sewerage Project, over 170 km of water supply and sewer pipelines will be laid, and seven water pumping stations plus 38 sewer pumping stations will be upgraded. Performance-based contracts will strengthen the utility’s management. The project seeks safer, more reliable services, better climate resilience and public health, and a more efficient, financially sustainable water system for the city.
