IIT Gandhinagar Study Projects Continuous Decline in Cauvery River Flow till 2050 due to Climate Change

Save

A study by IIT Gandhinagar indicates that the Cauvery River may see a steady decline in water availability until 2050 because of climate change. It projects a reduction of about 3.5% in total river flow over 2026-2050. Observed data show that the Cauvery's flow has already fallen by around 28% between 1951 and 2012. In contrast, rivers such as the Ganga and Indus may see higher flows due to global warming. The analysis used CMIP6 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6) climate models.
