Researchers at IISER (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research), Thiruvananthapuram, have synthesised a compound named magnesium hydridomethylzincate, made up of magnesium, zinc, hydrogen and carbon, which releases fuel gases on heating. When heated in solution at 100°C, it produces hydrogen; when its crystals are warmed to 80–110°C with no solvent, both hydrogen and methane are given off. Being a solid, it may offer an alternative to transporting these gases under high pressure, although it is sensitive to moisture. Further research is required to determine whether the compound can be reused after the gases have been released.
