The Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife (SC-NBWL) recommended that the pygmy hog be added to the critically endangered species list under a central conservation scheme, the Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats (IDWH).

The pygmy hog (Porcula salvinia), the world's smallest and rarest wild pig, lives mainly in Assam's grasslands and is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The Wildlife Institute of India suggested extending conservation to habitats such as Jaldapara (West Bengal) and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
