Hazaribagh in Jharkhand emerges as safe habitat for five vulture species; breeding centre proposed

Save

Hazaribagh in Jharkhand is emerging as a safe home for vultures, with their regular presence and natural breeding recorded. Five of India's nine vulture species occur here: White-rumped Vulture, Indian Vulture, Slender-billed Vulture, Himalayan Griffon and Egyptian Vulture. The Jharkhand Forest Department has proposed a conservation-cum-breeding centre in Hazaribagh, and a 100-km vulture safe zone covering parts of Jharkhand, West Bengal and Bihar is planned. India's vulture numbers have fallen by over 95% in three decades, mainly due to toxic residues of certain NSAIDs given to livestock.
