The 13th edition of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2026, released by the Sydney-based Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), has reported a fall in global terrorism during 2025. Deaths linked to terrorism dropped by 28%, while the number of incidents fell by 22%. Even so, the report notes that terrorism is becoming more concentrated, decentralised and digitally driven. Nearly 70% of terrorism-related deaths took place in five countries: Pakistan, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Terror groups are increasingly relying on online radicalisation, lone-wolf attacks, small autonomous cells and digital platforms.
