WIPO's Global Innovation Index (GII) 2026 ranks 139 economies on innovation. Switzerland stayed first for the 16th straight year, followed by Sweden and the United States. India was 38th overall and first among both 36 lower-middle-income economies and 11 Central and Southern Asian economies. It ranked 49th on inputs and 25th on outputs, and topped the world in ICT services exports. Shenzhen–Hong Kong–Guangzhou was the leading cluster, ahead of Tokyo–Yokohama; Bengaluru was 25th and Delhi 27th. The index uses about 80 indicators across two equally weighted sub-indices, Innovation Input and Innovation Output.
