The Madras High Court has dismissed a review petition filed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Its February 2026 order directs that drinking water, sugar and salt sold in plastic packs must carry a warning about possible micro and nano plastics. The court clarified that the order does not declare these products unsafe; it only seeks to inform consumers. FSSAI argued that scientific evidence on health effects is still inconclusive. The Supreme Court had earlier treated the challenge by FSSAI and the Union Health Ministry as withdrawn on 18 May 2026. FSSAI has agreed to back further studies by ICMR and IIT Madras.
