Growing freshwater inflow is upsetting the ecology of Lonar Lake in Buldhana district, Maharashtra, India's only meteor impact crater lake in basalt rock, formed about 50,000 years ago when a meteorite struck the Deccan basalt. A Ramsar site, it is known for its saline and alkaline waters. Rainfall and nearby deep borewells are diluting the lake, lowering salinity and harming its microorganisms and biodiversity.
