The foundation stone for the State's first Sea Turtle Conservation Centre was laid at Guindy, Chennai. The Centre of Excellence will cost Rs 14.50 crore and is being set up under the World Bank-supported TN-SHORE (Tamil Nadu Sustainably Harnessing Ocean Resources and Blue Economy) project to strengthen research, monitoring, training and coordination. Tamil Nadu is the only Indian State with five of the world's six sea turtle species. Coasts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore see major annual nesting, and the centre will focus particularly on the endangered Olive Ridley.
