The Forest Declaration Assessment 2026 found that global deforestation declined by 15% in 2025, yet the world is not on course to halt and reverse forest loss by 2030. About 7 million hectares of forest disappeared in 2025, and the cumulative gap against the reduction path since 2021 stands at 10.7 million hectares. Tropical Latin America and the Caribbean cut deforestation to 33% below the 2018–2020 baseline, while losses kept rising in tropical Africa. In 2024, 65.4 million hectares saw declining ecological integrity. Forest protection and restoration received a mere US$6 billion in 2024, only 0.3% of all climate finance worldwide. Protected areas cover 17.33% of land and inland waters, short of the 30% target for 2030 under the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
