National Engineers' Day 2026 marks M. Visvesvaraya's birth anniversary

National Engineers' Day is celebrated on September 15, the birth anniversary of M. Visvesvaraya, who was born in 1861 at Muddenahalli in Karnataka. He was the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918 and worked on major infrastructure projects, contributing to irrigation, water management and flood protection. He authored books such as Planned Economy for India and Reconstructing India.

State of the World's Birds 2026: 45% of migratory bird species declining

BirdLife International's State of the World's Birds 2026 report, the first edition dedicated to migratory birds and their flyways, says 45% of migratory bird species are in decline and one in nine is threatened with extinction. It notes that the Slender-billed Curlew went extinct in 2025, the first global bird extinction in mainland Eurasia and Africa in recent centuries.

PLFS August 2026: Workforce Participation Rate rises to 52.8%, unemployment at 5%

According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), the Workforce Participation Rate (WPR) for persons aged 15 and above climbed to 52.8% in August 2026, its highest level since March. Rural WPR rose to 55.8% while urban WPR slipped to 47%. The overall unemployment rate eased to 5% from 5.1% in July.

India joins UK-Italy-Japan Tempest sixth-generation fighter programme as dialogue partner

India has become a dialogue partner in Tempest, the sixth-generation fighter jet programme jointly developed by the United Kingdom, Japan and Italy, with induction planned from 2034. The status lets India discuss the programme's technology, progress and capabilities, but it does not make India a buyer or co-developer. Tempest has received US$6.1 billion to advance its full-scale design phase.
